So anyone who has perused my longer articles may be aware of my heartfelt respect and deep admiration for the monarch of horror, the unparalleled wordsmith Stephen King. There is barely a novel or short story by this man that has not been turned into a feature film, and it is widely agreed that the most successful translation of his words from print to silver screen is courtesy of Stanly Kubrick via his sterling ode to ‘The Shining’.
Also, his keen sense of humour. |
Sure, Stephen King may have hated it, but what does he know? Perhaps it wasn’t the carbon-copy translation that many were hoping for, but as far as adaptations go, ol’ Kubrick couldn’t have done better. What King does for worlds, Kubrick did for visuals, and drawing a comparison between the two doesn’t seem fair. There isn’t a person alive who could have done a better job of either, respectively.
The same, however, might not be true for the posters. Although the original designers did an adequate job…
… scores of future talent have since taken it upon themselves to attempt to re-capture the terrifying, hypnotic themes of the film.
Here are some of my favouites. You can find a fuller list here.
