The word is out, so to speak. The public deadline for one of government’s more expansive and expensive efforts to accomplish absolutely nothing is fast approaching. For those of you who have yet to RICA your phone – possibly the most misguided attempt by our befuddled government to prevent crime since the mass parole and early release fandango of several years ago – you have until the 30th of this month to register or Big Brother’s going to cut you off, and they’re super-serial this time, guys.
For realsies |
At some big-nobb gathering yesterday, Jimmy Manyi said: "Cabinet calls on all South Africans to comply with the statutory requirement of the Rica legislation, which is part of the government’s effort to fight crime. The deadline for the registration of cellphone SIM cards ends on June 30. […] No extension of the deadline is considered."
It is interesting to note that, of all the major mobile players out there, over 90% of all their contract subscribers have RICAed, while aprox. 93% of pay-as-you-go users have not. We’re going to assume that all the criminals we’re trying to put away via this excessive national effort are in the other 17%...
To the best of our knowledge, no reporters were arrested during the writing of this article.
